Let’s try this again… - June 27th, 2009
Finally, after many design iterations and failed attempts, I have a blog design I’ve completely happy with and the drive to keep it up. It’s been a busy week, but a good one. I’ve been blessed to pick up quite a few freelance jobs, most of which are pretty cool projects, including perhaps the largest job I’ve done so far. Obviously, this means I am even busier than normal, working at my normal job and all of these new freelance gigs. But it is definitely a good problem to have.
I recently redesigned my portfolio, which you can see over at http://www.55eleven.com. For designers, a portfolio is pretty critical. Without one, it’s quite difficult to prove to potential clients that you can actually design. It’s a also somewhere to get work from: people looking for web design might happen across a portfolio, like the work, and then contact the designer. So earlier this week, I decided to give my portfolio a long overdue redesign. I put it up, and without a couple days I started seeing a huge traffic spike, and several people got in touch wanting me to do work for them. Turns out, it got featured on several design galleries across the web. This has been another huge blessing, as ‘being featured,’ as it’s known in the industry, not only increases traffic, but also provides credibility to the designer that the community recognizes them as a talented designer. And as I said, this has also led to more work. This has probably been the highlight of my week, as I (and others in the design community) feel like I’ve reached that next level of being a designer.
Besides work, I’ve been reading a lot, as usual, and watching Wimbledon. I’m so glad Murray is through, and Roddick as well. Monday should be a day of great matches as the second week kicks off, and I’m excited to watch. Thankfully the time different works out wonderfull for us here in the US, not like the Australian where I had to stay up until 2 or 3 in the morning to watch the matches!
